Men’s Retreats

A retreat is a man stepping out of his life for two or three days to look at it honestly, with other men doing the same thing. I’ve hosted them in Arizona, California, Colorado, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Utah, West Virginia. Where the next one lands depends on where the men are, which is where you come in.

The pattern is always the same: a handful of men from one region say they’d come, a date gets picked, and it happens. Not the other way around. If you want a retreat near you, tell me where you are.

How the retreats run

We typically hold two retreats a year, and very loosely speaking, we aim for one in the western half of the country and one in the eastern half, so the next one is never too far from anybody. Each retreat is a group of 12 to 24 men, which is the size we have settled on over the years: large enough that you meet men whose lives look nothing like yours, small enough that by the last morning no man there is a stranger to you.

A retreat typically runs from early Thursday evening through late Sunday morning, and it is offered at the least we can charge and still put on a great experience, which usually lands somewhere in the $800 to $1,000 range. The notification email always states the exact price plainly before you commit to anything.

As for the feel of it: casual, deeply connecting, and non-cliquish. Men arrive from the community and men arrive knowing nobody, and by the first evening it has stopped mattering which is which. There is no inner circle to break into and nothing to prove, and the men who have been to five retreats treat the man at his first one exactly the way they were treated at theirs.

Get notified about retreats

The default is every retreat: give us your email and you’ll hear about all of them, wherever they land. If there are specific areas you’re uniquely interested in, flag them in the form. One email when a retreat is scheduled. That’s the whole deal.

Pick any you want. This doesn’t limit anything — you’ll still hear about every retreat while “Any state” is on. It just tells us where you’re watching for.

Questions men ask about retreats

What happens at a Masterful Men retreat?

From early Thursday evening to late Sunday morning: honest work with a group of men, structured sessions, real conversation, and time on the land. Not a seminar, not a sweat lodge cliché, and not a weekend of sitting in circles talking about feelings with no direction. You'll leave with your feet under you and a handful of men who know you actually.

Where will the next retreat be held?

We typically run two retreats a year, aiming loosely for one in the western half of the country and one in the eastern half. Past retreats have been held in West Virginia, California, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. When enough men from a region ask for one and commit to coming, that region moves up the list.

Do I need to be a Basecamp member to attend a retreat?

It helps, but it isn't a requirement for every retreat. Members usually get first notice and a member rate. If you're on the notification list below, you'll hear about retreats either way.

How many men attend a retreat?

Between 12 and 24. That range is deliberate. It is small enough that you will actually know every man there by the last morning, and large enough that you meet men whose lives look nothing like yours. Nobody hides in the back at that size, and nobody dominates the room either.

How much do retreats cost?

We offer retreats at the least we can charge and still put on a great experience, which usually lands between $800 and $1,000 depending on the venue. The notification email for each retreat always states the exact price up front. No surprises, no upsells.

You don’t wait for a retreat to start

The community works all week, every week. Basecamp is where men between retreats do the daily work, and where the men who’ll sit around the next retreat fire actually meet.
